SHE SLEEPS IN SILENCE

The mountains 'round here look like a woman
                                    lying naked on a bed
                                                - Dave Alvin (“Out in California”)

Little wonder, the earth is female—
the moon, a golden amulet
rising from her breast, her feet at rest
with the slope of Sulphur peak
as her long dark hair
forever streams into the creek.

Apart from men,
native women gathered here
beneath her supine silhouette
made sacred by the moon
to be a healing place
each time she took a breath.

She shares her dreams:
comfort and lasting peace
beyond the ever-escalating
chaos and confusion
that rattles impatient minds
like a gourd full of seeds.

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

20161115-img_5865

                                            Sigh no more, ladies.
                                                                                            Time is male
and in his cups drinks to the fair.

                                                 – Adrienne Rich (“Sanpshots of a Daughter-in-Law”)

The women here wear leaves,
offer shade and dance in place
of plans to clear the unimproved—

or they bear children, populate
with coyote pups that learn
to clean the plates of men

girls fill with grass, raising
cows for heifer calves—
women teaching women.

The hawks are nesting, almost
everything on the wind
is a feminine production—

no passing fad for a buck.
I’ll raise my glass, bet
our future on the women.

Wordless Wednesday

THE GIRLS

IMG_3909

It’s all about the girls
on this ranch, mothers
and grand, grandmothers
grazing a life away.

We’ve found our pace
despite the drought
trusting one another’s
competence and will.

Gentle strumming
in the background,
dark to light
and black again,

no day the same,
each moment full
of contrasting details,
lyrics raining down.
