all the evolving angles
of survival.

HOME OF THE GROUND SQUIRREL

Our straight lines, but new
obstacles and opportunities
for others.

SPOON ROCK

IMG_4335

Old black horse, tennis shoes.
I was ten, give or take a year or two,
driving cows and calves up Greasy
well-before they built the dam.

Dad hollering at the bunch splitting,
at me, at God, at everything.
You asked me then when we were done,
if I wanted to be a cowboy?

Tear streaks dried like a second skin,
I cried, “No!” and meant it—
horseback, just below Spoon Rock.

Amid the green, we have become old men,
of all the things we could have been,
going slow, just below Spoon Rock.

JUST BEGUN

IMG_0061 - Version 2

No small accomplishment
bringing life to this world—
a job just begun.

INDIGNANT

Interrupting a face full
of the good life
can draw disturbing looks.

DAY ONE

IMG_0931

Since Day One, drawn
to the fire, meat and music—
new words to an old song.

DOWN IN THE VALLEY

Bad air from the Bay
trapped beneath the warm
sunshine and new grass growing.

STRAWBERRY CLOVER

IMG_4984 - Version 2

Wild explosions in orbit
just above the green feed
around our feet.

TARANTULA NEST

IMG_0842

Refurbished hole in the ground,
dark, deep and sticky—
but I just can’t fit.

DUST AT DAWN

IMG_0683

In a cloud, horseplay rising
from a two-year drought—
time to feed to breathe.
