WOE BE TO INTRUDERS

Clinging to a willow branch
above the cattails, singing
across the pond at dawn,

this world is small enough
for herons and mud hens,
a loan goose and bullfrogs—

all the drama necessary
for a rich full life
of trying to get along.

  1. This entry, “Woe Be to Intruders”, so simply and beautifully defines the larger picture of our life on an earth that is small enough for humans to try to get along. Perfect!

  2. We have lots of these blackbirds in Illinois. They are chatterers!

    • Though it doesn’t show in this photo, this is a tri-color blackbird, becoming rarer, I understand. To me, their song often sounds like a rusty gate hinge.
