DUST AT DAYLIGHT

We rise to dust we stir,
greet dawn with a cigarette
to clear our lungs.

  1. Good luck with that! Best wishes for surviving this long, hot summer in some kind of good shape. Maybe that big El Nino will bring us some relief.

    • The cigarettes are nothing compared to the years of dust we breathe, especially in the corrals. Expensive bad habit, we weigh the hazards to our health that’s ever at risk to livestock wrecks and rattlesnakes that seem tame compared to the road we take to town. Thanks for the comment, and trust you and Greg have found shade and a cool breeze.

  2. Wow, what an evocative image – clearing your lungs with a cigarette. Powerful.

    • Robbin & I have quit smoking several times for obvious reasons, but it’s the ever-present summer dust that really chokes us up and precipitates pneumonia among our calves.

      • I can’t imagine what it is like shepherding calves like you and Robin do. My sister had 75 head of dairy cows in Vermont before the bottom fell out of the milk business and I know it was hard BUT they didn’t have severe water shortages and dust like you do there.
