  1. I love seeing the riders in motion as they bring down the little calf. This would be fun to see in person rather than at the rodeo. But not sure if I would like the hot iron part. I’m a bit of a softie in that area. Great pictures of the day.

    • Thanks Karen for your comment.

There is a natural grace in the branding pen with the rhythm of good horsemanship, horse and rider always adjusting, as no two calves and no two loops are quite the same. Sharing labor with neighbors in the cattle business, everyone concentrates on what’s easiest on the calf, unlike the timed competition of rodeo events where speed, style and endurance are paramount. Each with a job to do, working with our neighbors on the ground also becomes an efficient dance as we brand, dehorn, castrate, vaccinate, earmark, tag and dewormed each calf while on the ground. It’s an art we take great pride in.

    • There’s also something else going on here, Karen. This is Cody’s first time in our branding pen. A lot can go wrong, but it’s an honor of sorts to be asked to rope among men in their 50s, 60s & 70s who’ve branded calves all their lives. He did a fine job!

  2. Interesting photos to learn a little about the tasks on a ranch… sounds like a sense of help, co-operation and cameraderie too.
