FERRUGINOUS HAWK
I round the rock pile bend in the dirt road
where he waits atop a different oak tree
than yesterday, checking heifers calving
on uneven ground. He lets me try again:
a bigger lens to capture his assurance
as I edge closer, slower than a cow
but easier than a bobcat in squirrel town.
He knows me better than I know him
Googling photographs of hawks. Come
for a warmer winter than Alberta, he
owns the sky and the short-cropped flats—
pile of pigeon feathers in the horse lot.

Very much enjoy beginning my day with the photos from around the ranch or your always welcome poems.

You’re up early, Sylvia. There’s a couple more of this fellow under the new category for ‘BIRDS’ in the header.

GORGEOUS photo John. They are one of my most favorite raptors. Saw a big one sitting in a tree at the Marina last week. I love this time of year when all the raptors hit the flyway. And this morning about 100 geese flew over where I was working!

What a fabulous shot!
Could we use it in a photo gallery on the TC Treasures website (with a credit to the photographer)? (Presumably this hawk flies over Homer Ranch and/or Dry Creek Preserve once in awhile.
Maybe we’ll see a little snow on the peaks in the morning.
It’s getting glorious green underfoot here.
