A wonderful day for Robbin and me touring Woolley Canyon with Chuck and Lesley Fry where Virginia and Ken Mckee run their cows and calves. Though wild and rough (it takes a week to gather), it’s the most diverse piece of ground, ranging upwards to 3,600 feet, I’ve ever seen. Lots of wildflowers new to me:

Indian Pink (Silene californica)

Indian Warrior (Pedicularis densiflora)

Looks like beautiful country! A place where you can find beauty and peace.

Hi, John – My Mom used to find those Indian Warriors in a special place on the Mineral King Road. Those were the years when she and Ord lived at Oak Grove. I think I can remember where they grew (the flowers). Sam Pusateri told her they were considered rare. My favorite was (and still is) the Wind Poppy that comes out very near my birthday (5/5). John used to take me up to the many places on Section 19 where he knew they grew. It was my birthday treat! Halcyon days!

I thought you cowboys rode horses up into the hills

We do, Dan, but the side-by-sides have been a boon to the foothill cattle business. And what’s more, the cattle like them. We’ve found in many cases that’s it’s easier to lead the cattle than drive them.

Checking cattle and water resources, we can cover a lot more ground than horseback, pack supplements, etc. And with current prices for horses, some side-by-sides are cheaper.
