Time to Talk

Clarence & Robbin

  1. Thanks, John, for your posts – both the writing and the photos enrich my day; I read them all, though God knows I should get off the computer and get to work. I’ve thought a lot about the last few posts: the coyote, the calf pulling, and I really love this photo. Clarence looks amazing. He used to ride horses for my mother, Miriam LaChance, and I remember being in awe of him, but I was always too shy to really get to know him. Now I wish I had taken the time to learn more of what he had to offer. (Robin is beautiful too.)
The horses are great, their attentive expressions show they are at peace, ready to work, and satisfied with their jobs. I don’t often see horses in my daily work (as a trainer of dressage horses) of the quality that these good California bred Quarter horses show. They are still my favorites, and I still have two of my mother’s old quarter horses – both in their 30’s now, and both with a substance of mind and body that is rare.
Thanks again for the writing; keep it up and know that there are those of us out here reading it and appreciating it.

  2. Thanks, Kim. Your mother raised perhaps the best horse I ever owned, Docs No Sox, a bay gelding by Holey Doc Sox out of a Docs Dynamo mare, Decka Docka. I rode him for about 15 years, then Robbin for 3 or 4, and then my son for a couple more before we put him down last year at 30. These two solid geldings pictured are Fairlea bred, Colonel Pic sons that Clarence also trained.

I, too, have been thinking about these last few posts, wondering why and where they’re really coming from as I jump into a little prose, hoping that they are reflective of our culture, even though not necessarily politically correct. I’ll have notes together for ‘Still Cowboys’ to post soon. Totsie Slover’s comments have also helped me keep these posts frank and honest, rather than pleasing pieces to a more populous crowd.

We are still cowboys after all.
